The Problem of Driver distractions
Driving is the most dangerous task most people do on a regular basis. While drivers are human and it is human to be distracted, drivers must aim to concentrate 100 per cent all the time. Any attempt at multitasking increases the risk of crashing; even a moment’s distraction can be fatal. Such a distraction can be caused by anything that draws the driver’s attention away from the road through sight, sound, thought or physical action, ranging from use of mobile phones to looking at a roadside advertisement.
Research has found driver inattention within three seconds of crashes was the leading contributory factor in nearly eight out of 10 of crashes and 65 per cent of near misses studied. Employers have a legal responsibility to take all reasonable and practical steps to ensure the health, safety and welfare at work of employees. This includes when they are driving on company business and includes tackling the dangers of distractions.
